5. Passage-way from Prüm to Bitburg via Schönecken and Waxweiler ( Ca. 50Km )

Map material: Wanderkarte Prümer Land Nr. 17 des Eifelvereins, Wanderkarte Naturpark Südeifel Blatt 1 Nord

Signs:      yellow shell on blue ground (Jacobins pilgrimage) hiking trail No. 5 (Eifelvereinswanderweg); black triangle (Willibrodus trail)

From the Karolinger Hall in Prüm, passing the Convict  to the Basilica, we cross the river Prüm and follow the B 265 till Rommersheimerheld. From there we follow the B 51 towards Rommersheim. At the roadside cross of the Virgin Mary in Rommersheim we turn to the left, pass the end of the town and take the country road to Schönecker Schweiz. In Meyersruh we pass the valley Schalkenbachtal till the valley Nimstal and then reach Schönecken. (Alternative: more exhausting but culturally more inspiring: From Meyersruh we take the Karolingerweg < No. 15 and No. 2, cross the valley and go up the hill. Shortly before Hersdorf we leave the Karolingerweg and follow the No. 2, then the No. 1 via Keltenfliehburg into the valley Altburgental. Shortly before reaching the city there is a possibility to go steep upwards to the left to the castle of Schönecken).

We cross Schönecken following the signs till we almost reach the village Dingsdorf. There we cross the road and go steep upwards and then just as steep down into the valley Nimstal. We follow the river Nims till Nimsreuland and leave the valley in the village. Then we follow the valley Heisendorfbachtal till the tunnel under the motorway.

From there we go till Lascheid and from there we follow the L 10 till the Ancient Roman Trail which we follow until we reach the Mariensäule. The citizens of Waxweiler erected that column out of gratitude in 1948 because Waxweiler escaped any demolition during the 2nd World War. From the Mariensäule we take the path steep down to Waxweiler, cross a brook and then reach the parking place for hikers directly behind the bridge of the village. From there we go through the village, pass the Eifeldom and the sculpture of the Holy Willibrord and over an elevation proceed to Niederpierscheid via Mauelner Mühle and then on the road till Mauel.

Along the Prüm we walk through the village of Mauel till Merkeshausen and then till Echtershausen. There we leave the Prüm and over the elevations at the storage lake of Biersdorf reach again the valley of the Prüm. We follow the valley via Hermesdorf and Wißmannsdorf till Brecht. There we take the way to Bitburg Stahl.

From Stahl we walk over the Kolmeshöhe to the Bedaplatz and the Beda-Institute. Again over the Kolmeshöhe, crossing the cemetery, we reach a country road to Masholder which takes course along the main road. We cross a bridge over the B 257, pass the Red Cross base and arrive at Masholder.
